What is VDI ?

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a desktop virtualization technology where a desktop operating system, like Microsoft Windows, is run and managed in a centralized server . The virtual desktop image is delivered over a network to an endpoint device, which allows the user to interact with the operating system and its apps as if running locally. The endpoint may be a traditional PC, thin client device or a mobile device.

Two key components of  Virtual Desktop Infrastructure are a) Hypervisor b) Connection Broker.

Virtualization is the technology which  allows us to create multiple simulated environments or dedicated resources from a single, physical hardware system. Software called a hypervisor connects directly to that hardware and allows you to divide  the  system into separate, distinct, and secure environments known as virtual machines (VMs). The physical hardware, equipped with a hypervisor, is called the host, while the many VMs that use its resources are guests. These guests treat computing resources—like CPU, memory, and storage—as a pool of resources that can easily be relocated. Operators can control virtual instances of CPU, memory, storage, and other resources, so guests receive the resources they need when they need them.

The connection broker is a software program that serves as the go-between for the user and the resources on the platform. This software validates user names and helps manage the on-demand access to virtual machines, virtual clients, terminal services servers, and other devices from any place that has an Internet connection. The connection broker also monitors the activity levels on the network, provisions virtual desktops, assigns the user role, and works to manage the computing resources. VDI can be classified as persistent and non-persistent. Persistent VDI is customized for a personal user, and the user can log in to the same desktop each time. Non-persistent VDI consists of desktops that revert to their initial state after the user logs out.
